Being A Science Family

Simon & Lauren attended graduate school together at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD. During this time, they wrote grants together for small projects and were the co-Principle Investigators (PIs) for a six-month field excursion to collect data for their dissertations in Hawaii. They both received their PhDs at the end of 2013, a couple of months after Joey was born. After three months of family leave, Simon started a position as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Acoustics Division at the US Naval Research Lab. Lauren completed maternity leave when Joey turned one in August 2014 and also assumed a Postdoctoral Fellow position at NRL, one floor up from Simon in the Remote Sensing Division. They plan to continue working together for the rest of their lives. So of course, they think a lot about how to pull that off. You can find stories of our trials, tribulations, successes, and ideas on being a science family here.
